Meet Betty Henderson
It’s difficult to come up with an appropriate resume that will point out my qualifications to act as acquisitions editor for the new juvenile division of High Hills Press. It is such an important responsibility to take on the duties of reading and guiding authors who wish to write for young minds and I want to emphasize that I intend to take it seriously indeed.
For seventeen years I was with the public library system in the Ozarks (prior to time spent as assistant editor with a local newspaper and the years since then working as a free-lance writer). During that period, the majority of my time was spent acting as librarian for pre-school children through approximately fifth and sixth graders.
One of my jobs was reading book reviews and ordering such books as were praised and recommended. One of the sources I depended heavily on was The Horn Book, considered for many years to be the ‘Bible’ for children’s librarians. It featured reliable and thoughtful reviews, as well as articles that tied me into the world of what was being published for children around the world and here in the states. I became so particular about quality that I often locked horns with the administrator because of the funds available. (Quality often equals money.)
I have written myself for years and have been published many times. However it took a long time before I became good enough to enter the field of children’s literature. Now I want to bring that same experience into helping choose the books for High Hill Press to publish for children and young people. My expectations are simple: quality, good writing and the willingness to learn. I will expect our authors to extend themselves to produce the very best books they are capable of creating, to learn to market and to get out and sell their product. Together we will put the children’s division of High Hill Press into the mainstream of today’s small publishing houses.
